Key Player
Josh Hodgson – With Hodgson in the side, the Raiders go up a level in attack. The Englishman has superb vision and controls his side’s attacking play.
One to Watch
Jack Wighton – Wighton is a terrific runner of the ball, and with a move to 5/8 on the cards, it’ll be interesting to see if he can handle the number 6 jersey better this time around.
Rising Star
Emre Guler – a powerful runner of the ball with huge potential.
Predicted Top Try Scorer
Cotric (11)
Goal kickers
1. Jarrod Croker, 2. Aidan Sezer, 3. Sam Williams
SuperCoach
The Guns
Jarrod Croker ($509,700 | CTW) – Croker is a bona fide SuperCoach gun, averaging 60, 61, 72, 55 and 54 in the past five seasons.
John Bateman ($400,000 | 2RF/CTW) – Available at CTW, but set to line up at lock, the Englishman is a near must have in SuperCoach. Across 27 games last season in the English Super League, he averaged 23 tackles, 16.4 hit ups, 2.4 offloads and 4.4 tackle breaks per game. Priced at only 40 point average, get him in!
The PODs
Joe Tapine ($590,100 | 2RF) – Tapine was a revelation last season, averaging 63.1 PPG. For an 80 minute edge back rower, his base wasn’t as bad as commonly thought (42.8 PPG), so put that together with his evasive ability, he has a massive ceiling when playing in a favourable matchup.
The Cheapies
Emre Guler ($227,100 | FRF) – With a PPM of 1.1 last season, Guler should earn solid cash at the beginning of the season. Expect his minutes to increase this season with the loss of Shannon Boyd and Junior Paulo.
Brad Abbey ($203,800 | CTW/FLB) – Abbey didn’t score well in SuperCoach last season, but looked ok to the eye, and excelled in the NSW ISP. Coming in cheap and a chance to start at fullback, Abbey is a solid cheapie at CTW in SuperCoach if he starts.
Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad ($265,500 | CTW) – With seven tries in seven first grade games, the new recruit from the Warriors is eying off the fullback role at the Raiders. Jordan Rapana has compared him to Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Kalyn Ponga in terms of his footwork, and if he wins the #1 jersey over Abbey come round one, he will potentially be a better SuperCoach option (even though he costs $60k more).
Avoid/Be Wary of...
Josh Hodgson ($592,100 | HOK) – He’s a terrific player with a very high SuperCoach ceiling due to his creative abilities. However, his base is low, only scoring over 50 in base points in two games in the past three seasons. So, if you want security, probably look elsewhere. If you have a solid back up hooker, or you are willing to cop some low scores, Hodgson is still a solid option though.
Josh Papalii ($595,900 | 2RF/FRF) – This season, Papalii will probably be lining up at prop. Although he excelled playing in the middle last season when he played at lock, Ricky Stuart historically doesn’t play his props for big minutes. Papalii will probably be a trade target at some stage during the season, but wait to see how he is used before buying.
